Notes: Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, possibly the most iconic vineyard in Napa Valley, is renowned in part due to the numerous 100-point wines that have carried its vineyard designation. The historical vineyard was first planted by Napa pioneer Hamilton Crabb in 1868 and was later acquired by Andy Beckstoffer in 1993. Beckstoffer championed the concept of vineyard designated wines, marking a significant chapter in the vineyard’s history.
The vineyard is situated on the western boundary of the Oakville Appellation. Remnants of ancient streambeds, riddled with rock, run through the middle and west side of the vineyard, providing exceptional drainage - an ideal habitat for Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the past two decades, ten blocks have been accumulated in this coveted vineyard, including two rare blocks of Cabernet.
In terms of winemaking, there may be a unique opportunity where the blocks that bookend this iconic vineyard will be exclusively blended together in a complete wine. A Block is located on the eastern corner, while F Block is the farthest west. Both blocks were fermented separately and showed a great affinity for each other during early blending sessions. Both were aged in Darnajou French oak, with a hint of Taransaud T5 spice rack, and aged for 20 months in this cooperage.
Each block is considered of Grand Cru quality. During this period, a rigid barrel selection was conducted to create this rare, possibly first-ever “bookends” bottling of Beckstoffer To Kalon. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
