Notes: Named for Santa Barbara's reputation as the American Riviera, Riviera Rosé is inspired by the pale, dry rosés of southern France that Doug Margerum came to know while working in Provence. Bringing that Mediterranean sensibility home to California's Central Coast, Riviera Rosé is crafted primarily from Grenache grapes sourced from select vineyards in Santa Barbara.
These grapes are grown and harvested specifically for rosé production, then crushed and immediately pressed to stainless steel tanks for a long, cold fermentation. The wine is blended with various lots of Counoise, Cinsault and Mourvedre that were saignée’d. Saignée is a winemaking process where we bleed off a portion of slightly pink juice from a red must right after crush. The wine is filtered and bottled early to capture brightness and vibrancy.
Aromatically the wine is driven by summer ripened red fruits, such as strawberries and watermelon with a hint of chalky minerality. On the palate the wine is dry and crisp, with notes of wild, brambly strawberries and fresh cut summer herbs.
